Mike and Nina approached us to work with them on creating an upscale solution to the baby cot market, with their main goal being to pioneer sustainability through circular design. Recognising a gap in the market for reusable/reworked solutions, they conceived schemes such as rental or reduced fees upon product return at the end of use.
Their commitment was to offer customers a premium bedside crib without the premium price, ensuring high quality while remaining budget friendly.
They looked to Bang to design a product which would be intuitive, functional, and equipped with all the features – and more – found in current up-market bedside cribs. The aim was to provide the user experience a next level of sustainability along with an affordable parenting solution.
Our first challenge was analysing current competitors in the market. We identified significant challenges related to setup, transportation, and end-of-life issues. To address these concerns, we prioritised user ease at every stage of the process, introducing a thoughtfully designed leg assembly. For instance, the legs come preassembled, allowing users to effortlessly set the height of the product and place the crib on top, seamlessly slotting into place for immediate use.
Additionally, the product can be conveniently folded flat, simplifying transportation. Leveraging Bang's expertise in materials and manufacturing, we applied a meticulous approach throughout the project, from conceptual design to final alpha prototypes. Our focus on tweaking and refining both substantial components and intricate details has consistently propelled us toward the creation of a fully reworkable, circular product. Our experience in both hard and soft fabrics was invaluable for integration of the side, mattress and bedding elements.
Safety was critical during every stage and we worked closely with test houses and standards from very early in the development process.
The result is an elegant, user-friendly bedside crib, developed through an iterative design process. We continuously evaluated and upgraded elements to ensure a safe, easy-to-use, and cost-effective solution.
The client has been generated pre-sales interest and scaled with batch production, for launch at the London Baby Show. We are pleased to say you can now buy the crib via the alora website.
Although the project faced challenges, such as the increasing costs of materials, at Bang, we tackled these obstacles at every possible level. As a team, we believe that the product is exceptional, fitting well within the market and surpassing all initial requirements outlined by the client.
