Safety testing a new product

Product safety regulations and certifications are there to protect us as consumers. So, when engaging a product design and development agency to design your new product, it is important to consider relevant regulations from an early stage. At Bang Creations, we have over 17 years of experience in designing products to pass strict safety regulations before reaching the market or consumer.

It is this experience that we use to give clients direction on how to certify a new product. We will help you answer: What makes a product safe? How much does product safety testing cost? What safety regulations does my product have to pass?

What safety standards apply to my product?

When designing a new product for manufacture to take to market, it is crucial that you understand what safety standards it will have to comply with. Failing this can result in costly delays and revisions made by the product design team.

Here at Bang Creations, we keep safety at the forefront of what we do. By fabricating simple test rigs and working in 3D as early in the development process as we can, we can physically interact with our designs. We believe that interacting with prototypes is vital to identify potential hidden dangers or issues.

Finding a test house to suit your product

Different test houses tend to specialise in different areas. Bang Creations has worked with SGS, Intertek, Emtek, Dekra and NTS. Once you have identified what safety standards apply to your new product, it is sensible to research multiple test houses. This will ensure you find somewhere that is familiar with your safety regulations and are a good fit to partner with.

As we strive to bring innovation to every project, we often create new products that do not fit into one category. Your new product may fit into 2-3 existing categories or may not even have one yet. This makes finding the right test house for you even more important as they can advise you on which safety standards are most applicable to your new product idea.

When to safety test a new product

A full safety test must be completed on a finalised production product. However, many product safety testing houses will also review an early design or prototype. Whilst this is not a full test, they test using the same criteria and can advise whether you are on track before making financial commitments to tooling. As a product design agency, we do this as a standard practice when designing safety-critical products such as baby and toddler products.

Our experience with product safety testing is far-reaching. Whether you are exploring how to safety test kitchenware, games or baby products, we always aim to share our knowledge with clients who engage us to design products to pass safety regulations.

Should products be safety reviewed before patenting?

It is always advisable to have the unique selling point (USP) or innovative feature of your new product safety reviewed before patenting. Particularly true for common products with a seemingly obvious innovative feature, there could be a reason why no competitors have released a similar product. We would always recommend having a safety test house review your product’s USP, under a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), before spending more funds on patent searches.
