Bob:
A case for
glasses, devices
and more

The brief

One of the team came into the studio, took her glasses out of her case and asked us “Why has no-one innovated the glasses case?” It just sits here on my desk all day. “Can’t it do something?” So a few hours later we had built a cardboard mock-up of a case that could double up as a tablet and phone holder. Really handy when at work, but also on the move, especially on the plane or traveling by train.

The bang

Having a studio just off a commercial high street, we took the card model to 5 opticians and tried the biggest glasses we could for size. With the concept finalised, we took the design into 3D cad, 3d printed some prototypes and worked with our teams in Asia to get a factory cost and time line. Our next call was to our IP agent who filed design rights, patents and a trademark in the UK which we later rolled out to China EU and the US. We decided this was a great project to run on Kickstarter and learnt the process.

The result

Kickstarter was great success for us. We received more than 3 times the amount of funds we asked for, which proved to us there was a market. This helped us secure distribution for the product in the US, in the UK, in Taiwan and in Hong Kong. With our links to the British library we researched the optical market and Specsavers had the lions share. We licensed Bob to Specsavers who launched it with their range of Jeff Banks Glasses. Bob is now in opticians and on line with Amazon in the US, UK and Asia.
