Changing Mat
The brief
Every day, parents face the challenge of dealing with squirming, wriggling babies during nappy changes. So how can you keep them safe and still?
The founders of the The Turning Tot faced this frequent problem themselves and approached Bang with the problem. Working together we set out to create a solution which would offer parents the confidence and support to change their babies wherever they were.
It was essential that the product be easy to use, ensuring that any parent or caregiver could quickly and efficiently secure the wriggling tot. In addition to usability, the design had to be portable, making it convenient to transport from one location to another. This portability would allow parents to use the product not only at home but also while traveling, visiting friends, or going on family outings. Moreover, simplicity would be key when it came to securely fastening the tot.
They were looking for a complete, end-to-end solution, which meant addressing every phase of the product development process. Creating possible design solutions, testing working prototypes, costing, and manufacture assistance.
The bang
Our challenge was to take a traditional changing mat and adapt it to meet a series of complex requirements:
- Securely and reliably hold the tot in position
- Accommodate a wide range of ages and sizes
- Ensure comfort for the tot during use
- Prevent the tot from rolling, requiring the mat to have some rigidity while still being able to fold or roll up
- Create a user-friendly experience that is easy and consistent
To tackle these challenges, we explored several Velcro strapping arrangements to find the most effective configuration. The backing needed to provide enough structure to prevent flexing, ensuring the tot couldn’t twist or turn. We developed prototypes using folding boards, support wedges, and bamboo inserts to achieve the right balance of rigidity and flexibility. We produced this in house, enabling quick iterations.
Extensive testing with wriggling tots helped us evaluate and refine our solutions. Material selection was also crucial, as the mat needed to be easy to wipe down for hygiene purposes. Through rigorous testing and iteration, we solved each problem and delivered a product that meets both functionality and comfort needs.
We fully costed the product with selected manufacturers and took it through compliance testing at SGS. Bang supported the founders of The Turning Tot every step of the way to production and assisting with placing orders at the factory.
The result
A patented product which delivers what it promises. It’s compact, well cushioned and provides a safe and secure mat to change your Tot.
